The Department of Geology at San Jos State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Earth System Science, with an emphasis on climatic change that integrates oceanography, coastal processes and human-environment interactions. Areas of expertise may include shoreline evolution and dynamics, paleoceanography, wetland or estuarine science, risk assessment associated with climate change, and impacts of human-induced modifications of the environment.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. degree in the Earth System Sciences including earth science, marine science, geology, environmental science, or geography is required.
A record of excellence in teaching or evidence of promise for excellence in teaching is expected.
Applicants should demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Postdoctoral experience is desirable but not required.
Research should complement departmental strengths in subsurface hydrology, geomorphology, marine geology, paleontology, active tectonics, geochemistry, sedimentology/stratigraphy, and field geology.
Experience in enhancing and promoting diversity and inclusion (for example, through novel teaching and research approaches) is an asset.


The successful candidate must have the interest and ability to teach Earth System Science, Geology and the Environment, and GIS, and will take a leadership role in teaching and curricular development of undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise. The candidate will contribute to a growing departmental emphasis on Earth Systems. It is expected that the new faculty member will establish ties with federal and state agencies and engage with the public in the area of coastal resources/management. An ability and desire to foster and maintain interdisciplinary connections within the College of Science and other Colleges in the University (e.g. Social Sciences, Engineering), as well as Moss Landing Marine Laboratory is expected. Teaching non-majors is also expected. Research involving masters and undergraduate students is required, and external funding must be sought. Candidates must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, race, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through Inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advising.
