This series covers technical positions supervising, leading, or performing work involving applying a practical knowledge of the: methods and techniques of engineering or architecture; and construction, application, properties, operations, and limitations of engineering systems, processes, structures, machinery, devices, and materials. Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 or equivalent and above): Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems. Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as: Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes. Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: For GS-09: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Assisting engineers in a variety of tasks including construction product research, project and construction site inspections, collection of field data, field inspection report preparation, routine engineering computations, and drawing preparation using computer-aided design (CAD) software. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). For GS-10: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Assisting experienced specifications writers in the preparation of contract specifications for civil, structural, electrical and mechanical features of various projects such as dredging, lock and dam, erosion and shoreline protection, flood control, ecosystem restorations, breakwater and pier, and similar projects. Performing construction quality assurance and inspection work that requires an ability to read and understand contract plans and specifications.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). For GS-11: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: Preparing contract specifications for civil, structural, electrical and mechanical features of various projects such as dredging, lock and dam, erosion and shoreline protection, flood control, ecosystem restorations, breakwater and pier, and similar projects. Using SpecsIntact or similar software to produce contract specifications. Using the Unified Facilities Guide Specifications in the preparation of contract specifications. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).
