Focus on playing fair

During interviews, the subject of compensation will likely arise. If you are in a state with a salary history ban, you do not have to disclose your pay from prior jobs.

Focus on the pay range

Be prepared to be asked how much you are expecting to earn, and do your best to get your interviewer to provide the salary range before you put out a number (if it wasn’t disclosed in the job description). Here’s a sample response to the salary question:

I expect my compensation to be in alignment with my skill set, experience, and job responsibilities. What is the salary range for this position?

Asking this question is a great way to get the interviewer to respond with the range, and you can negotiate from there.
